Feds say Modesto firms scammed Hispanic homeowners

January 12, 2016
Three Modesto home loan modification companies and nine of their agents are charged Tuesday with violating the federal Fair Housing Act by targeting Hispanic homeowners for illegal or unfair loan audit and loan modification assistance because of their national origin, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing transactions, including those related to home mortgage loans, because of national origin.
“Families struggling to stay in their homes need real help, not false promises that make a bad situation worse,” says Gustavo Velasquez, HUD assistant secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

Modesto Latino discrimination lawsuit can proceed

May 05, 2010
Latino residents in south and west Modesto will get another chance in court to force the city and Stanislaus County to improve municipal services in their neighborhoods.
Judges at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal this week declined to throw out a lawsuit that charges the city and county discriminate against the neighborhoods, leaving the government agencies to answer for:
Comparably slow law enforcement response times in the Latino neighborhoods. It takes longer for a regional dispatch agency to steer an emergency responder to those neighborhoods than it takes to direct an officer to mostly white neighborhoods, according to data from 2004.

Black paratroopers reunite

June 12, 2000
White soldiers literally bet against them, wagering that the newly trained black paratroopers would refuse to jump out of airplanes.
The all-black, all-volunteer 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion proved them wrong, growing into a fighting force that kept its uniforms more starched and spit-shined than those of their white counterparts, for fear of soiling the battalion's hard-won dignity.
Next weekend, surviving members will gather in Redding to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first smokejumpers. It's also the 55th anniversary of the summer of 1945, when the battalion was sent on a secret mission to fight a feared Japanese bombing barrage of the Pacific Northwest.
