Palm Beach County, FL. October 31, 2001- The Fair Housing Center of the Greater Palm Beaches, Inc. (FHC) has filed a federal lawsuit against the owners and a rental agent of Springbrook Commons Apartments. The complaint alleges that Springbrook Commons discriminates against families with children, in violation of the federal Fair Housing Act.

Springbrook Commons Apartments was developed under the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, and is located in the City of West Palm Beach. Housing providers involved in the LIHTC program are mandated to certify that they will provide housing on an equal opportunity basis, in order to participate. The lawsuit is the result of a complaint filed with the FHC by a mother with a minor child, in which she alleged that they were denied a unit. Cooperating Attorneys for the plaintiffs are local civil rights practitioner Mikel D. Jones, Catherine Rodriguez Esq. of Conrad and Scherer and nationally renowned fair housing attorney Avery Friedman. “This may be the first time that a federal judge is being asked to examine whether a housing provider should pay back thousands of dollars in advanced LIHTC benefits, for violations of the Fair Housing Act,” stated Friedman.

The Fair Housing Center of the Greater Palm Beaches is the first and only local community-based non-profit fair housing organization in Palm Beach County Florida, is a HUD Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) and a member of the National Fair Housing Alliance.
